6/26/2023 0 Comments Kingdom of shadows by alan furst![]() ![]() And as Hitler marches into Prague, Morath's foolhardy country-hopping endeavours grow ever more dangerous. ![]() But this is a very dangerous game for Morath and his uncle, involving double dealing between defectors, SS renegades and British politicians. He has been helping his uncle Count Janos Polanyi, a diplomat, in his attempt to stop Hungary drifting into an allegiance with Nazi Germany. Ex-cavalry officer Nicholas Morath (originally from Hungary) returns to his young mistress in Paris's Seventh Arrondissement. It's 1938, and a sinister tide of Fascism is growing in strength throughout Europe. ![]() With Kingdom of Shadows, Furst moves his writing on to yet another level: the sense of danger and foreboding that informs this tale of intrigue and betrayal brings the reader the all-too-rare rush of excitement that only the finest novels in this field can convey. It must be daunting for an author to be compared to Graham Greene, John Le Carré and Robert Harris, but Alan Furst's much acclaimed sequence of novels set during the 1930s and World War Two unquestionably demonstrate the virtues of his predecessors: brilliantly detailed backgrounds in which the periods involved are faultlessly conjured up highly impressive plotting and (his ace in the hole) characterisation that has all the richness and complexity of the very best writers. ![]()

In fact, Huck Finn remains one of the most banned books of all time, having been considered “too vulgar,” “racist,” and “socially offensive.” Following the adventures of Tom Sawyer’s lively comrade Huck Finn, the novel is among the first to be written in vernacular English common to the Antebellum South, language that contributed to its long history of being challenged, censored and banned from classrooms and libraries. Since its first American publication on February 18, 1885, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been the subject of praise and controversy. When describing why she likes museums, Mac tells us, “I should probably pretend it’s because I’m so erudite and scholarly and love to learn, but the truth is I just love shiny, pretty things.” If this honesty was supposed to be endearing, it failed miserably. At one point Mac even mentions after trying to disguise herself, “I might never manage ugly, but at least I bordered on invisible.” Really. One thing Sophie Kinsella always excels in is a novel premise. Sophie Kinsella’s characters are familiar in some ways, but there are always a few twists to keep things fresh. Love Your Life is just perfect for a holiday or summer read. With all the rushing around and copious eating of Christmas, it’s nice to turn to a familiar author and settle in with a comfort read. Why I chose it: Christmas present and a nice relaxing read. The not-so-good: Sometimes the main character is similar between books – but then I don’t read Sophie Kinsella for boring, predictable heroines.
